Ethernet Connected but No Internet on Windows: Step-by-Step Fix

When Windows shows your Ethernet connection as connected but with No internet, the cable link to the router is working but something beyond it is not. The problem could be the router, your internet service, the address your PC was given, DNS, or a driver. A few quick checks tell you which.

1. Is it just this PC?

Check whether a phone on Wi-Fi or another computer on the same network can reach the internet.

2. Restart the modem and router

Unplug the modem and router (or the single combined unit) from power. Wait a full minute. Plug in the modem first and wait until its lights settle, which can take a few minutes, then plug in the router. If nothing on the network gets internet after that, check your provider's outage page or app, or call them; the problem is on their side or with the modem.

3. Check the cable and port

4. Check the IP address

Open Command Prompt and type ipconfig. Find the Ethernet adapter section and look at IPv4 Address.

Also check that Default Gateway is filled in. A blank gateway means the PC does not know how to reach the internet.

5. Test whether DNS is the problem

In Command Prompt, run ping 8.8.8.8, which tests an internet address directly. Then run ping google.com.

6. Check for a static IP or proxy setting

If the PC was moved from another network, it may have a fixed address that does not match the new router. In the same Ethernet settings, make sure IP assignment is set to Automatic (DHCP) unless you set it deliberately.

Also check Settings > Network & internet > Proxy. Unless you use a proxy on purpose, Use a proxy server should be off. Malware and some old software set proxies that break browsing.

7. Disconnect VPNs and check security software

A VPN that failed to connect, or did not disconnect cleanly, can block all traffic. Quit the VPN app fully. Third-party firewalls can also block traffic after an update; temporarily disable it to test, then turn it back on.

8. Reset the network stack

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these one at a time:

Restart the computer. If that does not help, Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset removes and reinstalls all network adapters. You will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi networks and set up VPNs again afterward.

9. Update or roll back the network driver

In Device Manager > Network adapters, find the Ethernet adapter (often Realtek, Intel, or Killer). If the problem started after an update, right-click, choose Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. Otherwise, download the newest driver from the PC or motherboard maker's site. Because the PC has no internet, download it on another device and copy it over with a USB drive.

10. Check the adapter's power settings

Some adapters drop the connection when Windows tries to save power. In the adapter's Properties, open Power Management and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

When it might be hardware

If several cables and router ports fail, the adapter does not appear in Device Manager, or the link lights never come on, the Ethernet port on the PC may have failed. A USB Ethernet adapter is a quick way to confirm and works as a replacement.
