How to Fix a Missing Caps Lock Indicator on Your Computer
Published 2026-10-16 · LuxuriousComputers Repair
You press Caps Lock and cannot tell whether it is on or off. The LED light on the keyboard does not turn on, or the on-screen notification that usually appears is gone. You end up typing passwords wrong because you do not know the caps state, or typing entire sentences in ALL CAPS before noticing. The Caps Lock indicator can be a physical LED on the keyboard, an on-screen display from your keyboard software, or a Windows notification — and each has different reasons for disappearing.
Physical LED indicator
Check that Caps Lock actually works
Before troubleshooting the indicator, verify that Caps Lock itself is functioning:
- Open Notepad and type a few letters. Press Caps Lock, type more letters. If the second set is uppercase, Caps Lock is working — only the indicator is broken
- If pressing Caps Lock does not change the case at all, the key itself is not registering, which is a different problem (key switch failure or keyboard driver issue)
Keyboard LED not lighting up
- Wired keyboard: If none of the keyboard LEDs work (Caps Lock, Num Lock, Scroll Lock), the keyboard may not be getting enough power from the USB port. Try a different USB port, preferably one directly on the motherboard (back of desktop). USB hubs sometimes do not provide enough power for keyboard LEDs
- Wireless keyboard: Low battery is the most common cause of LED failure on wireless keyboards. The keyboard conserves power by turning off LEDs when the battery is low. Replace the batteries and the LED should return
- Single LED out: If other keyboard LEDs work but only the Caps Lock LED is dark, the LED for that key has burned out or the solder joint has cracked. This is a hardware failure in the keyboard. On inexpensive keyboards, replacement is more practical than repair. On mechanical keyboards, the LED can often be replaced
- Laptop keyboard: Laptop Caps Lock indicators vary by model. Some have an LED in the Caps Lock key itself, some have an LED on the front edge of the laptop, and some rely on an on-screen display with no physical LED. Check your laptop model's documentation to confirm where the indicator should be
On-screen display (OSD)
Many laptops and some desktops show an on-screen notification when Caps Lock is pressed. If this disappeared:
Windows built-in indicator
Windows does not have a built-in on-screen Caps Lock indicator by default. However, Windows shows a Caps Lock warning on password fields — when you click a password field and Caps Lock is on, a small warning appears. If this warning is not showing:
- Check that the Caps Lock key is not remapped. Some keyboard customization software remaps Caps Lock to another function (commonly Escape or Ctrl for programmers). Check any keyboard remapping software you have installed
- In the Windows on-screen keyboard (Settings, Accessibility, Keyboard, On-Screen Keyboard), the Caps Lock key highlights when active. This can serve as a visual indicator while troubleshooting
Manufacturer software
Laptop manufacturers often include software that provides on-screen indicators for Caps Lock, volume, brightness, and other function keys:
- Dell: Dell QuickSet or Dell SupportAssist provides on-screen indicators. If uninstalled, the Caps Lock OSD disappears. Reinstall from Dell's support website
- HP: HP Hotkey Support provides the on-screen display. Check that it is installed and running
- Lenovo: Lenovo Hotkeys or Lenovo Vantage provides the OSD. Reinstall from Lenovo's support site or the Microsoft Store
- ASUS: ASUS ATK Package or MyASUS provides the indicators
If the manufacturer's OSD software was recently uninstalled (sometimes removed during cleanup or by optimization tools), reinstalling it restores the on-screen Caps Lock indicator.
Third-party Caps Lock indicators
If your keyboard has no LED and your manufacturer does not provide an OSD, third-party programs can add a Caps Lock indicator:
- TrayStatus shows Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock status as icons in the system tray (taskbar notification area). When Caps Lock is on, the icon changes — visible at a glance without looking at the keyboard
- Keyboard LEDs shows a small persistent overlay on screen with the current state of all lock keys
- AutoHotkey can be scripted to show a tooltip or play a sound when Caps Lock is toggled. This is the most customizable option for users who want a specific behavior
Caps Lock notification in password fields
If your main concern is entering passwords with Caps Lock on without knowing:
- Most modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) show a Caps Lock warning directly in password fields when Caps Lock is active. If this warning is not appearing, the browser may need an update or the website may not support the warning
- The Windows login screen shows a Caps Lock warning near the password field. If this is not showing, your Windows installation may have a display issue — try running sfc /scannow to repair system files
Caps Lock key remapped or disabled
If Caps Lock does not work at all (no indicator and no case change):
- Keyboard software: Gaming keyboards (Razer, Corsair, Logitech, SteelSeries) have companion software that can remap or disable keys. Check the keyboard's software for key remapping settings
- PowerToys: Microsoft PowerToys includes Keyboard Manager which can remap keys. If Caps Lock was remapped to something else, the original function and indicator are gone. Open PowerToys, Keyboard Manager, and check for Caps Lock remapping
- Registry edit: Caps Lock can be disabled through a Windows registry change (Scancode Map). If someone has edited the registry to remap Caps Lock, it will not function. Search the registry for Scancode Map under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout
- Group Policy: In corporate environments, IT departments sometimes disable or remap Caps Lock through Group Policy. If this is a work computer, check with your IT department
BIOS settings
Some BIOS settings affect keyboard LED behavior:
- Enter BIOS (restart and press F2, Del, or the key shown on the boot screen)
- Look for keyboard or LED settings. Some BIOS versions have options to control keyboard LED behavior during POST and in the operating system
- If the Caps Lock LED works in BIOS (you can test by pressing Caps Lock while in the BIOS setup screen) but not in Windows, the problem is a Windows driver or software issue, not hardware
Driver reinstall
- Open Device Manager (right-click Start, select Device Manager)
- Expand Keyboards
- Right-click your keyboard device and select Uninstall device
- Restart the computer. Windows reinstalls the keyboard driver automatically
- After restart, test the Caps Lock indicator
