How to Fix Copy and Paste Not Working on Your Computer

Published 2026-10-16 · LuxuriousComputers Repair

When copy and paste stops working — Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V do nothing, copied text disappears before you can paste it, or paste inserts old content instead of what you just copied — it disrupts nearly every computer task. The clipboard is a system-level function managed by Windows or macOS, and the problem can come from a stuck process, a conflicting application, corrupted system files, or a remote desktop session interfering. Here is how to fix it.

Restart clipboard-related processes (Windows)

The fastest fix for a clipboard that has stopped responding is to restart the process that manages it:

  1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc)
  2. In the Processes tab, look for Windows Explorer (explorer.exe). Right-click it and select Restart. This restarts the shell and often restores clipboard functionality immediately
  3. If that does not fix it, look for a process called rdpclip.exe in the Details tab. This process manages clipboard sharing in Remote Desktop sessions. If you use Remote Desktop at all (even if not currently connected), ending this process and letting it restart can fix clipboard issues. Right-click rdpclip.exe and select End task, then open a Run dialog (Windows+R), type rdpclip.exe, and press Enter to restart it

Clear the clipboard

A corrupted item on the clipboard can prevent new copies from working. Clearing the clipboard forces a fresh start:

Windows 10 and 11

  • Open Settings, System, Clipboard, and click Clear under Clear clipboard data
  • Or open a Command Prompt and run: echo off | clip — this replaces the clipboard contents with an empty string
  • Or press Windows+V to open Clipboard History and click Clear All

Mac

  • Open Terminal and run: pbcopy < /dev/null — this clears the clipboard
  • Alternatively, copy a single character of normal text from any application to replace whatever corrupted content might be on the clipboard

Check clipboard history settings (Windows)

Windows 10 and 11 have a Clipboard History feature that stores multiple copied items. If this feature is causing problems:

  • Open Settings, System, Clipboard
  • Toggle Clipboard history off, wait a few seconds, then toggle it back on
  • If clipboard only fails when trying to paste from history (Windows+V) but regular Ctrl+V works, the history database may be corrupted. Toggling the feature off and on resets it

Close clipboard manager applications

Third-party clipboard managers (ClipboardFusion, Ditto, CopyQ, Paste for Mac) intercept clipboard operations to add features like history and formatting. When they malfunction, they can block the system clipboard entirely:

  • Check the system tray for any clipboard manager icons and close or exit them
  • Test copy and paste with the clipboard manager closed. If it works, the clipboard manager is the problem — update it, reconfigure it, or replace it
  • Some applications that are not primarily clipboard managers also hook into the clipboard: password managers (copying passwords), screenshot tools (copying to clipboard), and virtual machine software (clipboard sharing between host and guest). Try closing these one at a time to isolate the conflict

Check for Remote Desktop clipboard issues

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is one of the most common causes of clipboard failure because it shares the clipboard between the local and remote computer. When the clipboard bridge breaks, copy and paste fails on both ends:

  • If you are in a Remote Desktop session, disconnect and reconnect. This resets the clipboard bridge
  • Check the RDP connection settings: in the Remote Desktop Connection app, go to Local Resources tab and make sure Clipboard is checked under Local devices and resources
  • On the remote computer, restart the rdpclip.exe process as described above
  • If clipboard issues happen frequently with RDP, consider using the web-based clipboard (Ctrl+Shift+V in some RDP clients) as a workaround

Run System File Checker

Corrupted Windows system files can affect clipboard operations. SFC scans and repairs protected system files:

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator (right-click Start, select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin))
  2. Run: sfc /scannow
  3. Wait for the scan to complete (it takes several minutes). If it reports finding and repairing files, restart the computer and test copy and paste
  4. If SFC reports it could not fix some files, follow it with: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth — then run SFC again after DISM completes

Check for stuck applications

When an application crashes or freezes while it has a lock on the clipboard, no other application can access the clipboard until that lock is released:

  • In Task Manager, look for applications that are Not Responding. End those tasks and test clipboard again
  • If you cannot identify which application is holding the clipboard, a quick way to test is to create a new user account on the computer and log in to it. If copy and paste works in the new account, a user-level application or setting in your main account is the cause

Restart the computer

A full restart clears all process locks, resets system services, and reinitializes the clipboard system. If copy and paste failed due to a transient glitch or a stuck process that you cannot identify, a restart is the most reliable fix. Make sure to do a full shutdown and restart — not just sleep or hibernate, which preserve the running state.

Check keyboard and shortcuts

If Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V do not work but right-click Copy and Paste do, the issue may be with the keyboard rather than the clipboard:

  • Test the Ctrl key by trying other shortcuts (Ctrl+A to select all, Ctrl+Z to undo). If none of them work, the Ctrl key is stuck or not registering
  • Check whether Sticky Keys or Filter Keys are enabled (Settings, Accessibility, Keyboard). These features change how modifier keys work and can interfere with keyboard shortcuts
  • Try an external keyboard to rule out a hardware problem with the built-in keyboard

Mac-specific clipboard fixes

On macOS, the clipboard is managed by a system process called pboard. If it crashes or hangs:

  • Open Terminal and run: killall pboard — macOS will automatically restart the process
  • If Universal Clipboard between your Mac and iPhone or iPad is not working, make sure both devices are signed in to the same Apple ID, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on, and Handoff is enabled on both devices
  • For clipboard issues in specific applications (especially between native Mac apps and apps running in virtualization like Parallels or VMware), check the virtualization software's clipboard sharing settings
