Blue Screen of Death: What It Means and How to Fix It
A Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) means Windows hit a critical error and had to shut down to protect your hardware. It's alarming, but it's also diagnostic — the stop code on the screen tells you exactly what went wrong.
What Causes a Blue Screen?
BSODs aren't random. Every crash has a root cause, and the stop code narrows it down:
- MEMORY_MANAGEMENT or IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL — faulty RAM or a driver conflict. This is the most common cause we see in Marion.
- CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED — a system file is corrupt or missing. Usually fixable with SFC and DISM commands.
- KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR — your hard drive or SSD is failing. This one's urgent — back up your data immediately.
- DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL — a hardware driver crashed. Often caused by a recent Windows update or new peripheral.
- SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED — usually a graphics driver issue, especially after GPU driver updates.
How to Read the Stop Code
Windows 10 and 11 show a sad face emoji and a stop code like WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR. Write it down or take a photo with your phone. You can also find recent crash logs:
- Open Event Viewer (search it in Start)
- Go to Windows Logs → System
- Filter by Critical and Error level events
- Look for entries around the time of the crash
DIY Fixes to Try First
1. Update your drivers
Outdated or buggy drivers cause the majority of BSODs. Open Device Manager, right-click your display adapter and network adapter, and select "Update driver." For GPU drivers, download directly from NVIDIA or AMD's website — don't rely on Windows Update.
2. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic
Search "Windows Memory Diagnostic" in Start and run it. Your computer will restart and test your RAM. If it finds errors, you likely need a RAM stick replaced — that's a $40–$80 fix at our shop.
3. Check your drive health
Open Command Prompt as admin and run wmic diskdrive get status. If it shows anything other than "OK," your drive is failing. Run chkdsk /f /r to attempt repairs, but get your data backed up first.
4. Run SFC and DISM
In an admin Command Prompt: sfc /scannow repairs corrupt system files. If that doesn't fix it, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth to repair the Windows image itself.
5. Undo recent changes
If the BSODs started after a Windows update, new software, or new hardware — that's your culprit. Uninstall the update via Settings → Update → Update history → Uninstall updates, or remove the new hardware.
