Laptop Overheating? Here's What's Wrong and How to Fix It
Your laptop is hot to the touch, the fans sound like a jet engine, and it's slower than usual. Overheating is one of the most common laptop problems — and if left unchecked, it can permanently damage your CPU, battery, and motherboard. Here's what causes it and how to fix it.
Signs Your Laptop Is Overheating
- Fans running constantly at full speed — the most obvious sign
- Hot to the touch — especially the bottom and keyboard area near the power button
- Sudden shutdowns — your laptop has a thermal protection system that shuts down to prevent damage
- Slow performance — the CPU throttles (slows itself down) when it gets too hot
- Screen freezing or blue screens — heat-related crashes are common, especially during gaming or video editing
- Battery draining faster than normal — heat accelerates battery degradation
What Causes Overheating
1. Dust Buildup (Most Common)
Over time, dust, pet hair, and lint accumulate inside your laptop's air vents and on the cooling fans. This is the #1 cause of laptop overheating, especially in laptops 2+ years old. A laptop that worked fine when new but now overheats almost always has a dust problem.
2. Blocked Air Vents
Using your laptop on a bed, pillow, couch, or your lap blocks the intake and exhaust vents on the bottom and sides. The fans can't move air, and heat builds up fast. This is the quickest way to overheat a laptop.
3. Dried-Out Thermal Paste
Between your CPU/GPU and the heat sink, there's a thin layer of thermal paste that helps transfer heat. This paste dries out after 3-5 years, dramatically reducing cooling efficiency. If your laptop is old and gets hot even after cleaning, the thermal paste likely needs replacing.
4. Running Too Many Programs
Every program running uses CPU power, which generates heat. Having 30+ Chrome tabs open alongside Zoom, Spotify, and other apps can push a laptop's cooling system past its limits. Check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) to see what's using the most CPU.
5. A Failing Fan
If one of the cooling fans has failed or is running at reduced speed, your laptop can't cool itself properly. Signs: one side of the laptop is much hotter than the other, or the fans are quieter than they used to be (not a good sign).
DIY Fixes (Free or Cheap)
Use a Hard, Flat Surface
Always use your laptop on a desk, table, or hard lap desk — never directly on fabric. If you must use it on a couch or bed, put a book or cutting board underneath to keep the vents clear.
Clean the Vents with Compressed Air
Buy a can of compressed air ($5-8 at any office supply store). Power off the laptop, and blow short bursts into the exhaust vents (where hot air comes out, usually on the side or back). You'll likely see a cloud of dust come out. Do this every 3-6 months.
Elevate the Back
Even raising the back of your laptop by half an inch (use a small book or a $15 laptop stand) improves airflow significantly. Most laptops intake air from the bottom, so giving them room to breathe makes a big difference.
Adjust Power Settings
Settings → System → Power → Power mode → Best power efficiency. This reduces maximum CPU speed, which reduces heat output. You'll notice slightly slower performance, but your laptop will run much cooler. Switch back to "Balanced" or "Best performance" when you need full speed.
Close Background Programs
Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), click the CPU column to sort by usage. Close anything using more than 5% CPU that you're not actively using. Common offenders: browser tabs, Spotify, Discord, game launchers, and automatic updaters.
When You Need Professional Help
These fixes require opening the laptop — something most people shouldn't attempt on their own:
- Deep internal cleaning — removing the bottom panel and cleaning the heatsink and fan assemblies directly. Compressed air from outside only gets about 60% of the dust.
- Thermal paste replacement — removing the heatsink, cleaning off old paste, and applying new paste. Can drop temperatures by 10-20°C on older laptops.
- Fan replacement — if a fan has failed or is making grinding/clicking noises, it needs to be replaced. Most laptop fans cost $15-30 for the part.
- Heat sink repair — sometimes the copper heat pipes develop internal leaks and lose their cooling ability. This requires a complete heat sink replacement.
