Why Is My Computer So Slow? A Complete Fix Guide

The Most Common Causes of a Slow Computer
1. Too Many Startup Programs
Every app that loads at startup competes for your computer's limited resources. Over time, programs silently add themselves to your startup list — browser helpers, updaters, cloud sync tools, and software you installed once and forgot about.
DIY fix: On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Startup tab → disable anything you don't need immediately at boot. On Mac, System Settings → General → Login Items.
2. Not Enough RAM
If your computer has 4GB of RAM (or less), it's going to struggle with modern workloads. Chrome alone can eat 2-3GB. When RAM fills up, your computer starts using the hard drive as overflow memory — and that's dramatically slower.
3. Old Spinning Hard Drive (HDD)
This is the single biggest performance bottleneck we see. If your computer still has a traditional hard drive (you can hear it clicking), upgrading to an SSD will make it feel like a brand new machine. Boot times drop from 2-3 minutes to 15-20 seconds.
