Computer Making Strange Noises? Here's What Each Sound Means

September 14, 2026 · LuxuriousComputers Repair, Marion OH

Computers shouldn't make noises beyond a quiet fan hum. If yours is clicking, grinding, buzzing, or whining — something's wrong, and the type of noise tells you exactly what.

Clicking or Ticking

What it means: Your hard drive is failing. The read/write heads are hitting the platters or trying to find data on bad sectors. This is the most urgent noise your computer can make.

What to do:

Critical: Do NOT run disk repair tools (chkdsk) on a clicking drive. They make failing drives work harder, accelerating the failure. We see this mistake weekly.

Grinding or Scraping

What it means: Almost always a fan problem. A fan bearing has worn out, or a cable is touching a fan blade.

What to do:

For laptops, a grinding fan is harder to access. Don't force the bottom panel — bring it in and we'll replace the fan same-day for most models.

Buzzing or Humming

What it means: Usually coil whine (electrical noise from the power supply or GPU under load). It sounds like a mosquito or high-pitched hum that changes with what's on screen.

What to do:

Loud, Constant Fan Noise

What it means: Your computer is overheating and the fans are running at full speed trying to cool it down.

Common causes:

Beeping at Startup

What it means: Your motherboard is sending a diagnostic code. The number and pattern of beeps varies by manufacturer:

Try reseating your RAM first (push each stick firmly until the clips click). If beeping continues, bring it in for our free diagnostic.
